Excessive stress seriously derails our health. More than 8 in 10 employed Americans are stressed out about their jobs, a new study has shown. Upset and stressed people are also more likely to face chronic health problems in their later life.

Thankfully, stress can be fought easily. Here are four extremely simple and proven ways to relieve stress. 

1. Turn off your digital life

By the end of the next years, average person will spend about 16 hours a day consuming media that would include TV, social media and phone time. Researchers have also linked smartphones and stress. A recent research further found that the more people used Facebook, the more likely they were to become sad. 

Lowering stress is as simple as clicking a button. You should start by tracking your media time and then try a media detox. The best way to go ahead is to have a cell phone-free weekend, or even skipping social media for a day would help.

2. These food help

Researchers have also linked some food to reduced level of stress. Next time you're feeling stressed, try having following food items. 

Dark Chocolate: Dark chocolates contain antioxidants which not only reduces stress by lowering levels of stress hormones but also lowers blood pressure.

Omega-3 fatty acids: Foods rich in omega-3s, such as avocados and fatty fish like tuna, salmon, herring, and sardines, also help lower stress. 

Citrus fruits: Vitamin C found in fruits like oranges, strawberries and grapefruit can also help relieve stress. 

3. Be active

Exercise is another proven way to relieve stress. According to the study published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, moderate physical activity helped people manage stress and anxiety. You can try activities such as yoga, Tai chi and pilates too.

4. Sleep well

People who don't get enough sleep are stressed. Poor sleep leads to lowered immunity, heart problems and feelings of anxiety and depression. Skipping the afternoon coffee should also help in getting a proper sleep.
