Even though New York City has earned the reputation of being the city that never sleeps, new statistics reveal that the title should really go to the Japanese city of Tokyo. Using data released by Jawbone, the creator of the fitness wristband trackers, UP, the Wall Street Journal has created a list of cities based on the amount of sleep its citizens get.

The dataset involved hundreds of thousands of people from 24 international cities and 21 cities within the United States. Overall, people sleep the most in Melbourne, Australia, averaging six hours and 58 minutes per night, and the least in Tokyo, with an average of five hours and 44 minutes per night. Americans fall somewhere in the middle, but should ideally get more sleep per night.

In the America, the city where people slept the most was in Orlando, FL at 6.93 hours. The city where people slept the least was Las Vegas, NV at 6.53 hours. New York City was fourth on the list of cities that slept the least, averaging 6.78 hours per night. The 21 cities averaged 6.8 hours of sleep per night.

Overall, none of the people from these cities slept more than seven hours a night. Experts tend to recommend people to sleep roughly seven to nine hours per night depending on age. These numbers suggest that people need to get some more shuteye. Studies have found that sleep deprivation can hurt the body both mentally and physically. However, the dataset is not nationally representative since not everyone can afford a digital wristband, with costs ranging from $79.99 to $149.99.

Aside from tracking sleeping patterns, the dataset also revealed the number of steps that people took. People from Stockholm, Sweden walked the most taking 8,876 steps whereas people from Sao Paulo, Brazil walked the least with a recording of 6,254 steps.
