Here we list down five nutrients that may help protect women from heart disease and also lower the risk of other chronic conditions such as diabetes, breast cancer and high blood pressure.
Vitamin D
Lack of vitamin D in women can develop brittle bones or in some cases even osteoporosis. According to a recent research, taking high doses (800 international units) of Vitamin D daily could reduce the risk of hip fractures in older women by 30 percent.

Folic Acid
Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9 is a vital nutrient for expectant mothers. It is also cardio-protective and helps build new tissues. Low folic acid might lead to conditions such as anaemia, weight loss, weakness, headaches and high levels of homocysteine in the blood, a risk factor for heart disease.
Calcium
When women approach menopause, the ability to make new bone cells decreases. Calcium makes up for that. Main sources of calcium include dairy products, tofu, cereals, soy and rice beverages, vegetables such as kale and broccoli.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
According to research, eating a higher amount of fish and Omega-3 fatty acids lowers risk of heart disease among women. Omega-3 fatty acids are a form of polyunsaturated fat - a healthy fat that may also help slow down the growth of plaque build-up in the arteries.
Vitamin B12
Scarcity of B12 can lead to conditions such as fatigues, weight loss, poor memory, dementia and depression. Study has found that postmenopausal women who lack nutrients in their diets, including vitamin B12, have an increased risk of becoming anaemic.
