Spoilage Concerns: Kraft Recalls American Cheese

Owing to concerns over storage of ingredients used in its American Singles Cheese, Kraft announced a recall for 7,691 cases of the product packaged with use-by dates February 20 and 21, 2015.

According to a release on FDA's website posted on August 29, the food major informed that an ingredient supplier did not follow the company's temperature standards which could lead to premature spoilage of the cheese.

"A supplier did not store an ingredient used in this product in accordance with Kraft's temperature standards. While unlikely, this could create conditions that could lead to premature spoilage and/or food borne illness; therefore, the company is issuing the recall as a precaution. Kraft has had no consumer illness complaints for this product associated with this recall," the company said in the FDA release.

Consumers should return the affected product for exchange or full refund. The release further said the affected product was produced at the company's Springfield manufacturing facility.

There have been no reports of illness or spoilage of the recalled product, the company clarified while urging customers to not consume the cheese.

Wbay said the recall includes 12 oz American Singles with February 20 and 21 use-by dates, 16 oz American Singles (12 and 36 count case) and 64 oz American Singles with February 20 use-by date, which were distributed only within the US.

The latest recall of its cheese products was Kraft's third such announcement in the last one year, Daily Reporter noted.

In May 2014, Kraft stated premature spoilage to recall 1.2 million cases of four varieties of cottage cheese including the popular Daily Chef Cottage Cheese. The company found that the supplier had stored ingredients outside its temperature prescriptions.

May's recall was preceded by another recall of 725,000 cases of Kraft and Polly-O brand string cheese after similar concerns arose seven months earlier, the reporter said.
