Ugly Men May be More Fertile
Handsome men are less fertile, a new study suggests.
Scientists found that facial masculinity was negatively associated with semen quality. In other words, handsome men have lower semen quality compared to their less comely counterparts.
Previous studies revealed that higher levels of testosterone damage sperm production. Researchers said that the latest findings suggest that there may be a trade-off between investments in secondary sexual signaling like attractiveness and fertility.
The latest study also revealed that males were more likely than females to perceive facial images as more attractive. Researchers said this suggests that men tend to overestimate the attractiveness of other men to females.
The findings are published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology.
