Vitamin D may help treat chronic kidney disease in children, according to a new study.

The latest findings reveal that combining vitamin D with additional treatments can help preserve kidney function in children suffering mild to moderate chronic kidney disease..

Researchers analyzed data from 167 children from a clinical study called the Effect of Strict Blood Pressure Control and ACE Inhibition on Progression of CKD in Pediatric Patients (ESCAPE) trial.

The latest findings revealed that kids with lower levels of vitamin D levels had significantly higher levels of blood markers related to kidney dysfunction. These kids also suffered significantly greater kidney function loss over time.

"Nutritional vitamin D supplements like cholecalciferol have a wide therapeutic window. Thus, clinical trials with cholecalciferol, a safe and effective vitamin D supplement with minimal need for monitoring, are recommended in children with CKD," lead researcher Rukshana Shroff, MD, PhD, of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London, UK, said in a news release.

The findings are published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN).
