Emission Cuts Alone Will Not Help the Climate, Says UN
United Nations on Friday revealed that the 150 nations that have agreed to participate in curbing the greenhouse gas emissions to slow the process of climate change will have to do a lot more than that. Right now, the global temperatures are rising to two degrees Celsius and emission cut alone will not be enough. According to the scientists, the warming ratio should be kept under 2 degrees by the end of this century if the world wants to limit the damaging impact of climate change such as droughts, floods and rising sea levels. By 2030, the strategies implemented by the countries will curb the emissions to 56.7 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, reports The Christian Science Monitor.
U.N. Climate Change Secretariat, Christiana Figueres, said that even though controlling greenhouse gas emissions is a very huge step towards controlling global warming, but it will not be enough. The plans called the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions will make up an important part of discussion in the U.N. Deal that is expected to taken up during Paris summit scheduled between Nov 30th and Dec 11th. The summit has been set up to fight off the global warming issues in the years to come starting from 2020, said the Christian Science Monitor.
In the summit, Fiugueres claims, it will be decided how to implement the INDCs into an agreement and how to periodically review the pledge made in these agreements. More than 200 countries have agreed to participate in a concerted effort to bring the global temperature down from 2 degrees to restore semblance to the problem of global warming. She said, "Many countries have been healthily conservative about what they have put forward". Environmentalists on the panel to be a part of Paris summit say that the agreement will be a starting point to control this global issue, as per The Christian Science Monitor.
