Depression Rates Highest During 30's
Keeping up with the tradition, it was believed that as you manage to get old, your happiness tends to elevate with time.
Previously, a person's 30's were considered as the time period of endless opportunities eventually leading an individual to be fully content and happy. But seems like the tables have turned and the reality is somewhat different as compared to the former researches.
According to a recent exploration, people who are in their 30's are not that pleased and satisfied as compared to their parents in their 30's. The reasons are countless and immeasurable and one of them is the presence of social and financial insecurity, keeping up with the everyday pressure, maintaining your spot amongst the competitors and lack of opportunities.
Starting the research from 1970, professor Twenge and her team considered individuals who were in their 30's or older were happier than young adults and even teenagers.
According to the researchers, the current world order has shook the youngsters in a pessimistic way, making them an epitome of pressure and anxiety. Every day they are inclined to live through the harsh challenges and encounters they face and are thus trying their best to search for a solution. In a nutshell, the sudden economic reality has given the youngsters a wakeup call due to which they are unable to find happiness.
Professor Twenge has also discovered that apart from the economic factors, social support and insecurity has allowed less people to be happy.
As part of the study, there was a visible five per cent drop as 38% qualified for a contented lifestyle in the 1970s and currently the rate has fallen to 33%.
Twenge has maintained that before hitting adulthood, there is less dissatisfaction and less elements of worry in life. But unfortunately, many elements are responsible for bringing the individuals in the scope of misery and disappointment.
The research has been published in Social Psychological and Personality Science.
