Last Known Ebola Patient Cured In Guinea

At last, the last patient of ebola in Guinea is out of danger, and discharged from a treatment center in Conakry, the capital city, say health officials. Two tests were conducted on the patient, a 20-month-old baby girl, Nubia. She is still under surveillance at a medical facility, though.

So far, the illness has killed more than 11,000 in West Africa.

Ebola first developed in Guinea in 1976. But now, unless some new cases are reported in the following six weeks, Guinea is free of ebola, according to BBC News. Neighbouring states of Sierra Leone and Liberia have already been classified as 'ebola-free' officially.

"We did two tests that turned up negative. She is completely cured of Ebola," said Fodé Tass Sylla, spokesman for Guinea's Ebola coordination unit.

Born on Oct. 27 in the Nongo Ebola Treatment Center, Nubia lost her mother, who was infected and died of ebola at the young age of 25. Nubia's family belongs to the last ebola-affected area in the country, that is Forecariah prefecture.

Nubia was cured due to the aid from the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), according to Reuters.

"We are pleased that she has been tested negative, but as she is the first infected baby to have recovered, she will continue to receive specialized medical support before going back home," said Laurence Sailly, MSF's emergency coordinator in Guinea.

The people hope that Guinea can join its neighboring countries in total freedom from Ebola even as Guinea enters its 42-day probationary period, according to Medical Xpress.
