The Gerber Baby Is 89 Years
The sparkling Gerber baby model, Ann Turner Cook, celebrated her 89th birthday on Friday, November 20 this year.
She is also a mystery novel writer and English teacher.
It was in 1928 that Gerber launched a nationwide contest for a baby's image that could represent their brand. Ann Turner Cook was the baby who was drawn by Dorothy Hope Smith, an artist neighbour. This baby, with sparkling, bright eyes, and chubby face with "pursed lips" emerged as the coveted face by the company, according to Fox 5. The image still remains as the trademark of Gerber, which became recognizable worldwide.
Now this has been official trademark for Gerber all these years, although the original model, Ann Turner Cook, the model, was discovered only in 1978.
"Her drawing competed with elaborate oil paintings, but the judges fell in love with the baby face Smith drew, and when they chose it as the winner, they insisted that the simple illustration remain a sketch," Gerber said, according to the New York Daily News.
Other babies who have been part of Gerber commercials are professional models who are selected by professional agents.
