Astronauts Celebrate Thanksgiving with Space Food
In a video that was sent by the NASA astronauts and crew members, Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren, showed a space food feast planned on the International Space Station. The food pouches were stuck on the panes using Velcro. Lindgren was seen peeling the foil container and revealed a peace of irradiated smoked turkey while pecking at its slice. Kelly said,
"We don't have much of this stuff, so I hope he enjoys that, because that was his Thanksgiving dinner right there," reports USA Today. Kelly was seen ripping a bag of candied yams almost causing the corn to float away from the bag. As he unzipped the zip-locker bag, he squeezed the yams out and took a bite, "Man, they are delicious," he said, but failed to convince the laughing Lindgren. "Good stuff," Lindgren agreed.
Since their Thanksgiving meal doesn't need much preparation, the six-member crew of NASA astronauts from U.S., Japan and Russia will be seen enjoying a day off on Thursday and watching some football in celebration of the big holiday. They thanked for the opportunity to be in space, their family members for being supportive and others who encourage and sustain the mission from the ground. Lindgren, due to return in December after a 6-month flight said, "I'm personally thankful for my friends and family, especially my wife and children, and I'm looking forward to seeing them here soon." Kelly will come home after concluding the mission in March, reports Florida Today.
"Being on the space station here and looking down at our our incredibly beautiful planet gives us a different perspective on what it means to be citizens of planet Earth," he said in the recorded message. "Since I've been up here, I've seen so many bad things that often happen down there. We follow that on the news. And it just makes me really thankful to live in a country like the United States that provides us with freedom and opportunity, and for me being a middle class kid from New Jersey, to just to have the privilege to come up here and represent my country like this. So this is what I'm thankful for on this Thanksgiving," as reported by USA Today.
