New Start-ups Channeling Social Media to Improve Mental Health
There is an app in the making that will help you perk up your bad mood. The new entrepreneurs are working on the possibility of creating apps that are based on therapeutic techniques, that are combined with social media, make people share their feelings through the app so that their therapy can be enhanced. "There are a lot of mood-management techniques that if people were taught could make an impact across the world," said Robert Morris, creator of social mental health apps like Koko and Panoply. "You're not really exposed to therapeutic techniques until you have a pretty serious problem in our society. Apps can be used as a stepping stone to give people more rigorous techniques rather than just chatting with friends," reports Wired
The new iOS app YouHue is an example of a 21st century app that helps the user send vivid emojis that are very specific to what you are feeling with your Facebook friends and then also request to return one. This app takes into the account the mood logging practice and mixes it into the new age social media. The interface used by YouHue is light, fun and quick to use and not daunting as one would expect such an app to be. But Kristi Kelly, working with her colleague Ammar Khan, in collaboration with Ney York University department of psychology on the app, says that he fun interface is just a way of "hiding the vegetables in the meal." She also said, "As we were doing research in psychology and neuroscience, we want to enable people to become more mindful of their emotions. I am able to reflect on how I'm feeling and why. That can be actionable," as reported by CNBC
