Deaf Children Can Enjoy Music With DJ's Innovation
A new device has been created by a DJ, Dimitri Hadjichristou, so that deaf children can enjoy music by using senses other than the ear, according to the Daily Mail.
His project began when he tried to help people experience music "beyond just listening" during his graduate studies at the University of Edinburgh.
The device was soon seen as a technique with major potential to help deaf children enjoy music.
The Vi device employs a tube which has beads inside linked to a speaker. The beads rattle and bounce, creating a lot of sound as well as an interesting visual. Children can control the Vi with multicolored synthesizers that can "add effects and distort the sounds being made", according to FastCoDesign.
"As the product is for children it had to be childish in its design," said Hadjichristou about the colored synthesizers. "This is why the casings share similar qualities to the likes of other toys such as Lego."
By touching the Vj, children can feel the vibrations and the bouncing balls.
"The funnel shape was purely dictated by the need for the ball-bearings to fall back into the center of the speaker," said Hadjichristou. "Later on I also decided I liked the shape as it resembled the projection of sound."
