Health Commissioner, Mary Bassett said, "When you see this warning label, you know that that item has more than the total amount of sodium that you should consume in a single day." Starting Tuesday, sodium warning will come into effect at the New York City restaurants. The Diners will now be able to see items that contain high levels of salt on the menu. The food items will be followed by warnings to make the diners aware of the high salt content so that they can make an informed choice. This new regulation in New York City is applicable to restaurants that have more than 15 outlets nationally and impacts more than 1/3rd of the eateries in the city, reports Ledger Gazette.

The officials of the New York City hope that the rule will encourage other cities to also follow the same guidelines for restaurants. According to Wall Street Journal, apart from the city banned smoking signs, calorie counts and sugary drink limitation, the restaurants will also have to display a salt shaker icon next to the items and the combo meals that have more than 2,300 mg of sodium or more. These warnings are just another step made by largest city of U.S. to improve the health of its citizens. "The people of New York City should fight against an overreaching government bureaucracy", Salt Institute trade group President Lori Roman said Monday.

Deputy health commissioner Sonia Angell, also a physician, said that most people do not understand the connection between high blood pressure, heart disease risk and high sodium intake. "The majority of salt in our diet doesn't come from the salt shaker - it's already in the food when we purchase it," Angell says. That includes restaurant food. " This is the reason, the restaurants are an important place to give the guidance to people about how to make these important diet decisions, as reported by NPR.
