Submit Your Application to be a NASA Astronaut

If you think you have it in you to be a NASA astronaut, now is your chance. The application process to apply for astronaut in NASA has been officially opened up and one can submit their application until 18th February, 2016. The selected astronauts will be announced by mid- 2017. However, don't consider this job application as any other. The selected astronauts can assist NASA reach Mars. "NASA is on an ambitious journey to Mars and we're looking for talented men and women from diverse backgrounds and every walk of life to help get us there," NASA administrator Charles Bolden, said in a statement. "This group will launch to space from U.S. soil on American-made spacecraft and blaze the trail on our journey to the Red Planet."

To be eligible to apply for astronaut's profile, NASA has some specific requirements. All the applicants need to have at least bachelor's degree in physical science, engineering, biological science, mathematics or computer science. Although, a PhD or a master's degree is preferred, said the space agency. Serious applicants are required to have 3 years of work experience in their respective fields or "1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft," said NASA. You are also required to have a 20/20 vision and must be able to fit into the spacecraft and the spacesuits that you will use on your job as an astronaut, reported Mashable.

"The class of 2017 could very well include the first people to step foot on Mars," NASA astronaut Anne McClain, a member of the 2013 astronaut class, told Mashable in an interview in November. "It could be our class, it could be their class, it could be after. It's an exciting time." Right now, there are 47 active astronauts who get an attractive pay of about $66,026 to $144,566 and will be required to travel frequently, said the job description posted on USA Jobs.
