Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton pledged to fund a research initiative amounting to $2 billion annually for the next ten years in finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease and other similar disorders.

US health authorities identified Alzheimer's as the sixth leading cause of American deaths. If the proposal would push through, it would raise research funding four times the current amount spent on the program to be paid for by Clinton's tax reform agenda as laid out in her plan.

"For me, the bottom line is if we're the kind of nation that cares for citizens and supports families, then we've got work to do and we need to do it better when it comes to diseases like Alzheimer's," exclaimed Clinton as quoted saying by NBC News.

The National Institute on Aging stated that Alzheimer's is an incurable brain disorder that inhibits proper functioning of the brain and severely affects a person's ability to do simple tasks as mentioned by Huffington Post.

According to Mass Live, the former first lady also outlined some important add-ons on top of the funding commitment such as tax relief for families with Alzheimer's patients and essentially a comprehensive care-planning services and coordinated senior care system involving the families, care givers, and health care providers.

Currently, there about 5 million US citizens diagnosed with Alzheimer's which is likely to increase to 15 million in the next four decades according to Alzheimer's Association.

"The best scientific minds tell us we have a real chance to make groundbreaking progress on curing this disease and relieving the pain so many families feel every day. My plan will set us on that course," said Clinton as stated by CNN.
