Facebook Users Identify 'Relic' That Puzzled Israeli Antiquities Authority For Six Months
What on earth is this rolling-pin-shaped object?
A Facebook user gave the answer, after Antiquities Authority in Israel struggled for six months to identify the source, and finally turned to the social media for help, said the Head of the Israel Antiquities robbery prevention unit, Amor Ganor, according to NBC News.
"To tell you the truth I've never seen anything like this before," Ganor said.
The gilded object was found in Jerusalem at a graveyard by a groundskeeper. At first, the officials thought it was an explosive, so it was handed over to the cops who in turn called a bomb squad to examine it and undertake a "controlled explosion".
However, the object remained undamaged, which proved that it was not explosive.
Once they received clearance, the Antiquities Authority x-rayed and analyzed the materials, Ganor clarified.
Once the experts found that the object did not seem to be part of any military applications, they put up a picture of the object on Facebook, and asked the users.
The answer came within a few hours. It was called a Weber Isis Beamer, a "German-made New Age device that claims to create a protective field against radiation" and meant to be used by naturopaths and people dealing with energy healing," according to the Indo Asian News Service.
"The wisdom of the masses has done its part," the Authority said on Tuesday.
The Italian man who identified the object, Micah Barak, has invited to Jerusalem to help him examine it closely.
