How You Can Save Your Eyes From Digital Strain.

Like everyone else, you are probably spending most of the day in front of the screen, which is telling on your vision.

"Digital eye strain is the physical eye discomfort felt by many individuals after two or more hours in front of a digital screen," stated the Vision Council in its 2015 Digital Eye Strain report. Its symptoms include a headache, neck and shoulder pain, blurred vision and dry eyes.

It said that 30 percent of U.S. adults spend nine hours or more before a screen while over 70 percent of them are "unaware of the potential dangers of blue light to eyes."

How will you minimise the risk?

The 20/20/20 rule says that you should look away from the screen every 20 minutes and instead look for 20 seconds at something that is 20 feet away. This helps your eyes to get refreshed.

"The main cause of digital eye strain is working at a close distance," Jessi Lee, an optometrist from Park Slope Eye, told CBS Boston. "The human eyes weren't designed to spend 10 to 12 hours a day looking up close so it's a relatively new phenomenon."

Also, drink a lot of water so that your eyes get refreshed and hydrated.

Do not drink sugary substances, which could also lead your eyes to get dry.

If you don't blink enough, your corneas can dry out, leading to blurred vision, according to Worksafe Tips from Oregon State University.

Reduce the light in your ambience, and position your computer screen at a little distance, just slightly below the eye level. Do not tilt the screen.

Fit some computer eyewear in order to block out the blue light from your screen and do not entertain the reflection from lights near or above you.

"It is important for consumers to be proactive about their vision health and to monitor if constant exposure to digital devices is impacting their eyes," said the Vision Council. "Practicing good eye health and proper eye care are key to preserving your vision."
