Mysterious 'Alien' Frogfish Caught In New Zealand's Bay Of Islands
One big surprise surfaced for New Zealanders when a black fish looking "alien-like" bobbed up on the Bay of Islands, according to the Daily Mail.
The fish was caught by Claudia and Glenys Howse. But it died, and its images were put on Facebook by the Te Papa Museum Friday.
"This weird creature is likely to be a species of Frogfish, but we won't know until we have a chance to examine it closely!" read a post on the museum's Facebook page.
The frogfish are said to be living in "almost every tropical and subtropical ocean and sea worldwide", but their fossils and records of their existence are very low, according to RT.
Other strange fish that have swum into the Australian seas include a goblin shark in New South Wales and another strange one in South Australia.
"It was very unusual. I have been fishing here for 30 years, and I have come across a few deformed fish, but never anything quite like this," said Garry Warrick, a professional fisherman.
This frogfish guy is quite a fierce number. He has the "fastest bite of any vertebrate species", and his mouth expansion speed is like that of a .22 rifle bullet. However that will be only in a medium that is about 800 times denser than air, reports the New Zealand Herald.
These frogfish go out on a hunt for prey with ambush tactics and can fit almost anything, such as crabs and shrimp, into their mouths.
