While annual records of the world's temperatures began to be documented since 1880, 2015 has been recorded to have been the warmest till now. Temperatures touched 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th century average throughout the world, according to Accuweather.

Moreover, the warmest weather periods have been observed in the 21st century, even as 15 of the warmest years on record occurred on 2001 and later.

"For our land temperatures, they broke the all-time warmest temperatures by a larger degree than any other record that we have had in the past," said Thomas R. Karl, the director of the National Centers for Environmental Information. "The 2015 data continues a pattern we have seen over the last four to five decades."

The rise in heat also had some effect on the Earth's snow cover. The 11th smallest annual snow cover was that for the northern hemisphere, at 9.5 million square miles.

With 2015 being warmer than its previous year, it is assumed that the pattern will continue, according to KQED.

"If you're gonna be betting, I'd bet that 2016 will be warmer than 2015," added Karl.
