Researchers say Porn View History Stored in Chrome Even After Closing the Incognito Window
The incognito mode of Google Chrome may not be as safe as you would think. It could still show the pornographic videos long after you shut down the windows. Even after you close the tabs, the contents could still pop up, said one researcher. Incognito is being infamously used to look at sensitive or pornographic content, that could lead to serious embarrassment, as reported by Metro
The glitch was spotted by Evan Anderson, a student of engineering at the University of Toronto. He said that he first spotted the problem when he opened a game of Diablo III. However, instead of the game, what opened up on his screen was a porn site that he was reportedly viewing a few hours before, he said. According to Anderson, the problem is caused due to an Nvidia chip. This chip doesn't erase the content when a new application is opened, meaning that it can trickle into other applications, as reported by The Independent. 'Like a scene from Hollywood, the game temporarily froze as it launched, preventing any attempt to clear the screen. The game unfroze just before clearing the screen, and I was able to grab a screenshot,' says Evan Anderson.
"It breaks the operating system's user boundaries by allowing non-root users to spy on each other," he wrote. "Additionally, it doesn't need to be specifically exploited to harm users - it can happen purely by accident. "Anyone using a shared computer could be exposing anything displayed on their screen to other users of the computer." Anderson says that he had already emailed Nvidia and Google about the bug two years ago. However, Google refused to fix it "because Google Chrome incognito mode is apparently not designed to protect you against other users on the same computer (despite nearly everyone using it for that exact purpose)", says The Telegraph
