SoCalGas Given A Number Of Measures To Implement For Fixing California Gas Leak

The leaking well at Aliso Canyon, Calif., was closed permanently on Saturday after the Hearing Board of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) agreed to an abatement order.

The board supported the order by a 4-to-1 vote, which was advocated after a marathon six-hour meeting with the public in Woodland Hills, reports Yahoo News.

The abatement order ordered the Southern California Gas company (SoCalGas) to close and seal the well forever, offer resources to check the air quality in the region all the time, detect the leaks in the 115 reservoir wells at Aliso Canyon and use an infrared camera to keep a watch on the leak for one month, among other orders.

Next month, on the 20th, a hearing will check on the extent to which the abatement order terms have been executed.

However, residents were more strident and asked SoCalGas to close all the Aliso Canyon facility wells permanently. Michael Brune of the Sierra Club said "SCQAMD's failure to put Californians' livelihoods first is shameful, and Gov. Brown should intervene swiftly. There should be no other choice but to shut down the dangerous Aliso Canyon facility and look to close every urban oil and gas facility throughout California and our country, to ensure the health of our communities and our climate is never again sacrificed for corporate profits," according to The Los Angeles Times.
