EL Nino Flooding Mapped by Citizen Scientists with the Help of Drones

Tech-enthusiasts, starting this month, have been asked by the Nature Conservancy to capture the erosion of the coastal area as well as flooding that happens due to El Nino, the weather phenomena responsible for the wettest winter for California. With the help of these geo-tagged crowd-sourced images of the storm and beach flooding will help the scientists predict what the future holds as global warming causes the sea levels to rise. The images taken by the drones can help produce high-resolution 3D maps that can prove helpful to the scientists for determining if predictive models regarding coastal flooding are accurate or no, said Matt Merrifield, the organization's chief technology officer.

"We use these projected models and they don't quite look right, but we're lacking any empirical evidence," he said. "This is essentially a way of 'ground truthing' those models," reports Fox News

According to the experts, storms caused due to El Nino are a small peak into the future and also added that this project will create public awareness. Due to the nature of the project, crowd-sourced, the results may not be accurate. However, the additional information may prove instrumental. "It's not the answer, but it's a part of the answer," said Lesley Ewing, senior coastal engineer with the California Coastal Commission. "It's a piece of the puzzle," said Boston Globe

As per the pictures that have emerged so far, there is already a look into how the sandy, sunny Californian beaches will appear in a century. However, the real dangers of the natural disasters are not known yet. While the climate change scientists may not be real scientists, but they are professionals in what they do. Drones have played a big role in getting the data as required by the scientists for their analysis, according to I4U News
