Earthquake Makes New Zealand Cliffs Collapse Into Sea

Christchurch was struck on Sunday morning by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, according to CNN. It struck the cliffs nearby strongly enough to cause them to fall into the ocean.

The most severe earthquake before this hit New Zealand's south island almost five years ago. One earthquake killed hundreds.

The force of the quake was felt by 150,000 to 200,000 New Zealanders. No major damage was caused in the city. Fortunately, it was not as destructive as the 2011 earthquake that killed 200.

Still, about 40 aftershocks have been felt so far.

This part of the world is notorious for earthquakes, being situated on the Ring of Fire, says BBC News, due to regular earthquakes and volcanic eruptions here, spanning almost the whole of the Pacific Rim.

Some shops got evacuated, but for most business was undisturbed. There were no casualties at all.
