One Out Of Three Adults In The US Discovered To Be Sleep Deprived
A recently published government report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that one out of three American adults are deprived of right amount of sleep.
The report involved a careful data analysis of a 2014 survey of 444, 306 adults. The findings revealed that 65.2% of the survey respondents admitted not having the right amount of shut-eye they needed.
"That's a big problem. You don't function as well, your ability to pay attention is reduced, and it can have serious, long term side effects. It can change your metabolism for the worse," remarked director of the Emory Sleep Center Dr. Nancy Collop of Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta as quoted saying by Fox News.
According to CDC, lack of adequate sleep constitutes a public health concern as studies link it to increased risks of various health conditions like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, mental illness and other chronic conditions.
"People just aren't putting sleep on the top of their priority list. They know they should eat right, get exercise, quit smoking, but sleep just isn't at the top of their board. And maybe they aren't aware of the impact sleep can have on your health. It doesn't just make you sleepy, but it can also affect your health and safety," said study author Anne Wheaton as mentioned in a CNN report.
Overall, about 83.6 million American adults are deprived of the minimum-required seven-hour sleep. To get a healthy dose of sleep each night, CDC advised people to deliberately change to a healthier lifestyle.
"Lifestyle changes such as going to bed at the same time each night; rising at the same time each morning; and turning off or removing televisions, computers, mobile devices from the bedroom, can help people get the healthy sleep they need," said CDC director of Population Health Dr. Wayne Giles according to a Reuters report.
