Study: Children Spend Too Little Time Outdoors
Children are expected to be spending more time indoors this summer, rightly so, to avoid the scorching heat.
A latest survey results reveal that be it summer or winter, children are spending a lot of time indoors, watching television or being on the computer, one of the major causes behind the rising number of obese children in the country.
Apparently, kids these days spend as much as 10 times more time on couch bound activities when compared to the time they spend outside playing. This means, that the average time spent by children on indoor activities is equal to one day in a week and about just two-and-a-half hours on outdoor activities.
However, in spite of the survey which took 2000 people into consideration, only four in 10 parents admitted that their children spent too little time outdoors.
The survey was conducted on behalf of wood preservative firm Ronseal, which has launched a campaign called Go On, Get Outdoors.
"It is sad to see that so many children in this generation are virtual strangers to playing outside. They spend hour after hour playing video games or watching television or at the expense of getting outdoors and playing with friends or family in the fresh air," Kim Wilde, 51, the pop singer turned gardener was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.
"Just 20 years ago it was routine for children to come home from school, ditch their stuff and rush straight outdoors to play with friends in their garden or in the street," Wilde added according to the report.
