2016 NFL Draft: Jared Goff, Carson Wentz Headline This Year’s Draft Class

The 2016 NFL Draft finally got underway though the top picks hardly brought surprises. Jared Goff of California emerged as this year’s top selection with the Los Angeles Rams investing in a young quarterback of the future.

It marked the second time in seven years that a quarterback was selected as the top overall pick, the 22nd quarterback since 1967 per ESPN. He is also the first California quarterback to be selected in the first round since the Green Bay Packers chose Aaron Rodgers back in 2005 with the 24th pick.

The Rams ended up with the rights to the top pick after a previous trade involving the Tennessee Titans. The Rams were able to move up to first in exchange for two first, two second and two third picks to the Titans in mid-April. The deal also saw the Titans send their fourth and sixth round picks to the Rams.

Goff is expected to play behind regular starting quarterback Case Keenum. Goff is seen as a pro-ready passer which will hopefully help out the likes of Todd Gurley and Tavor Austin.

With Goff out, the Philadelphia Eagles expectedly went for Carson Wentz of North Dakota State. The Eagles were able to get the no. 2 pick privilege following a deal with the Cleveland Browns.

Wentz may however have to work his way up in the roster seeing that he will now be the third quarterback behind vets Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel. But like Goff, he is likely to be a work-in-progress and an investment for the Eagle’s future.

But his move up the ranks could be made easier if Bradford gets his wish of getting traded. The veteran quarterback was reportedly upset when he found out that the Eagles traded for the no. 2 pick. Apparently Bradford felt he would be the star quarterback of the Eagles but taking in promising rookie quarterback (which eventually was Wentz) poses some kind of threat to his aspirations.

Despite his trade demands, Bradford needs to work on his game and prove that he deserves to be a starter. He has been paid massively but has simply not produced for the Eagles.

One team that inquired on Bradford was the Denver Broncos. The deal failed to gain fruition since the Eagles were reportedly seeking too much in exchange for the 28-year-old former first round pick per another report via ESPN.
