What is your BMI?
Your body mass index can indicate whether you are healthy, overweight or obese. Overweight and obese individuals are at increased risk for many diseases and health conditions, including hypertension, hich cholestoral, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and respiratory problems and some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon).
More than one-third of U.S. adults and almost 17 percent of youth were obese in 2009-2010.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the standard weight status categories associated with BMI ranges for adults are:
Underweight | BMI is under 18.5 |
Healthy Weight | BMI is 18.5 to 24.9 |
Overweight | BMI is 25 to 29.5 |
Obese | BMI is above 30 |
The National Heart Lung and Blood Insittute has a simple way you can check you BMI. All you need to do is imput your height and weight and the program will calculate your BMI based on the information you input.
