Kell Brook vs. Jesse Vargas Title Fight In The Works

A potential unification bout could be in the works between IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook and WBO welterweight Jesse Vargas this Summer if both camps can come to an agreement.

Brook’s handler Eddie Hearn was recently in New York and the Matchroom Boxing promoter reportedly sat down with Carl Moretti, VP for Top Rank to discuss a possible tiff. Though the lunch meeting was more about the possible fights they could work out, Brook and Vargas seemed to be the names that stood out in the meeting.

“Had a great meeting with Carl Moretti, and one of the subjects was my desire to make a big fight for Kell,” Hearn said via ESPN. “I said we would be willing to fight Bradley or Vargas. We are looking at end of July/early August and Carl told me that would be too early for Bradley. We switched our attention to Vargas, and being a belt-holder that's definitely a fight we want.

Both Brook and Vargas are looking to move up the boxing ranks and such could be the spark that both fighters need for their respective careers.

Brook was criticized by Amir Khan for not facing high profile boxers, singling out that this is one reason why his stock has not been rising. And that was also one reason why a “Battle of Britain” has failed to come to fruition, fearing the match would not render ample revenue. Brook holds a 36-0 win-loss card, 25 of them coming from knockouts.

On the other hand, Vargas is a boxer on the rise. Though he lost a controversial decision to Timothy Bradley Jr. in June last year, the 26-year-old fighter was able to get back on track last March with a 9th round TKO over Sadam Ali to win the vacant WBO welterweight title.

The only problem now however is the location of the fight. Vargas prefers the bout to happen in the US so it will be interesting if Brook will have any objection on that.

“My only concern is the location of the fight. The fight would have to be in the U.S. He has fought in the U.S. before and it shouldn't be a problem for him to accept a fight in the U.S. Who doesn't want to fight in Las Vegas?” said Vargas.
