Tony Nominations 2016: Hamilton Set To Sweep Awards
Tony award nominations for 2016 are announced on Tuesday and to no one's surprise the fan-favorite "Hamilton" is nominated for awards under 16 categories. "Hamilton" bags the honor of the most number of nominations a musical had in the Tony awards history ever in 70 years.
"Hamilton" is nominated for awards under all the segment of theatre-making including writing, directing, music, acting, dance, and design. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show's creator who is nominated for three categories for his performance in the title role, for his book and music said that it feels incredible and humbling. It is to be noted that the 36-year old star had already won Pulitzer Prize for his amazing work on the show.
"Hamilton" is a story based on life and death of Alexander Hamilton, which broadly and bold describes not just the character but the country as a whole. The musical brings to people insights on the origin of the country and its aspirations, multi-ethnicity and the contemporary music.
"When I had the idea, I did say to myself, 'I can't believe no one's done this yet,' because it felt to me like a good idea - Hamilton's life was uniquely suited to the things that are my strengths: hip-hop and musical-theater storytelling," Mr. Miranda said in a telephone interview shortly after the nominations were announced, reported The New York Times.
"Hamilton," which was opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Aug.15, 2015 is nearing a sales record of $100 million and the honors and accolades the show received through the last six months is too many to mention. The musical finally beat the record set by "The Producers" in 2001 and "Billy Elliot the Musical" in 2009 with 15 in Tony Awards.
"Other interesting acting nominations: Lange as best actress in a play, for "Long Day's Journey Into Night," along with Lupita Nyong'o, for "Eclipsed." The toughest race may be for best actress in a musical, in which the nominees are Laura Benanti for "She Loves Me," Carmen Cusack for "Bright Star," Cynthia Erivo for "The Color Purple," Jessie Mueller for "Waitress" and Phillipa Soo for "Hamilton,"" noted The Washington Post.
