NFL Rumors: Paxton Lynch Is No Threat To Mark Sanchez In Denver Broncos QB Starting Job
The Denver Broncos were expected to scamper for a veteran quarterback in light of Peyton Manning’s retirement and the surprise departure of Brock Osweiler but so far that hasn’t happened. Left with only a developmental player in Trevor Siemian, the Super Bowl 50 champs looked like they were in a heap of trouble. They did manage to take in Mark Sanchez though his caliber wasn’t exactly the type that could make Broncos fans rest easily.
Names like Colin Kaepernick, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Sam Bradford were mentioned, even a former Bronco in Tim Tebow. To date, none of those names have come close to being signed with the only new quarterback coming from the 2016 NFL Draft – Paxton Lynch.
Like Sieman, Lynch is seen as a developmental player but likely a more interesting one considering the assets the Broncos moved to get the chance to pick him. Lynch will likely be mentored by Sanchez who is expected to be the Broncos’ starting quarterback pending any further deals.
Right now, Sanchez is simply thankful that the Broncos have looked up to him and haven’t signed a veteran quarterback. All of that aside, the 2009 NFL draft pick of the New York Jets is focused on the task at hand.
"Whether it was a veteran that came in, any of the names that were out there, any of these guys in the draft that are becoming pros this year -- my focus wouldn't change," he said via NFL.com. "And the most important thing for me was to get involved with the players here, meet these guys, develop a relationship, learn this playbook as fast as I can, and then get involved in the community and establish myself as a leader on this team. That's going to take time and it's going to take reps, no matter who was here."
The only question now is how Sanchez will pan up for the Broncos and how long Lynch will be under development. The 22 –year-old from the University of Memphis is expected to step up to a starting role soon though everything hinges on how he develops.
This early, Sanchez has some useful tips for Lynch as he goes through the process.
"In any situation as the first pick for a team, just keep your head down and work. That's kind of what I try to do. And watch the other guys. Find a couple of veterans that have lasted in this league and been successful in this league and just follow them around until they shoo you away."
