Oscar De La Hoya Vows To Call Gennady Golovkin If Canelo Alvarez Wins
Boxing takes center stage this weekend as WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez test the mettle of Briton Amir Khan in the voluntary fight over at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez is a heavy favorite over Khan mainly because of the weight class where the Mexican is pretty much comfortable with.
Despite being the favorite, Khan is not totally being counted out. Alvarez’ camp is aware of the threat that Alvarez brings, particularly due to his speed.
In the eyes of many however, moving up two weight classes could impair his agility and punching speed. Khan refuses to indulge on questions surrounding all that and has vowed to come out punching and triumphant.
Either way, it is the end result that is of utmost importance. A Khan upset will rock the division and ruin the plans ahead for the Mexican. An expected win by Alvarez however will not matter much though the underlying factor is who he would face next.
Under normal circumstances, all of that points to a hanging mega bout involving Gennady Golovkin. Triple G took care of business last April 23 by demolishing Dominic Wade and is expected to be among the curious spectators in Las Vegas this Saturday.
As everyone knows, settling the proposed 155 lbs. catchweight has hindered a big bout between Alvarez and Golovkin from taking place and the drama behind that is expected to reach a feverish pitch if the Mexican comes out the winner.
Alvarez has understandably not touched on the matter and if focused on Khan. Instead, promoter Oscar De La Hoya has stepped up to say that he will take the initiative and call Golovkin to kick off negotiations.
“Canelo knows how to focus on the job at hand and take care of business,” De La Hoya said via the Boxing Junkie. “And then, come May 8th, I’m going to start making the calls to Golovkin’s people and see if we can work it out.”
While De La Hoya’s response should temporarily calm the storm, it is also a known fact that the negotiations (if true) will be easier said than done. Both camps have tackled the subject before but to no avail.
The WBC has set its foot down and should Alvarez hold out and not oblige, he may eventually be stripped of the title. That scenario is of course one thing most folks do not want to happen since it deprives them of a big fight between two big names in boxing at the moment.
