GMOs Are Safe To Eat, According To Scientists

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) weren't appreciated by some people since gene modification is considered to be against nature. A recent study on this problem has it that it is safe to consume genetically modified foods; however, skeptics are yet to accept it.

According to the research carried out by National Academy of Sciences, genetically modified foods (GMO foods) are safe and effective for human consumption. The study which was funded by U.S. Congress was criticized by Food & Watch, a consumer rights group even before the official announcement of the study findings.

"Policymakers develop 'science-based' rules and regulations on GMOs based on what the science says - especially what the National Research Council (NRC) says, because it is part of the National Academy of Sciences, chartered by Congress to provide scientific advice to the federal government," wrote food researcher Tim Schwab in the Food & Water Watch website, reported Tech Times.

However, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine noted that it hasn't found any difference of risk between food groups from conventionally bread crops and foods from genetically modified crops. The committee analyzed around 900 studies done in the past 20 years to confirm whether or not GMO foods are good for humans.

The committee also listened to around 80 speakers that discussed on the topic in public meetings. Furthermore, about 15 webinars, 700 comments and documents submitted by public were reviewed by the committee for the purpose of the study.

"It's always nice to have somebody outside the usual industry come along and say 'hey, it is safe, trust us, we've done the research,' and it backs up everything we've been saying," said a farmer Brandon Hunnicutt, according to NTV Abc. "We've served billions of meals with GMO crops in it, there's been no harm. We feed it to our cattle, to our pigs, our poultry industry," he added.

Fred Gould, chair of the committee that produced the report said that looking at farmers gaining from the BT crops, which helps them to counter the pets without the use of pesticides it appears fine to conclude genetically engineered crops are effective and safe.
