Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 1100 Price, Specs & Release Date: Smartwatch For Kids and Kids At Heart
Chip maker Qualcomm has announced it is launching its new chipset, called the Snapdragon Wear 1100, which has been specially designed for use in "targeted-function" devices. The announcement was made at the Computex trade show in Taiwan on Monday.
According to the Verge, the new Snapdragon Wear 1100 chipset can be used in devices with less functionality like fitness trackers, smart headsets and kids' smartwatches or watches for the elderly.
"Snapdragon Wear 1100 is targeting purpose-built wearables, or those that are designed only around a few usage cases," said Pankaj Kedia, senior director and business lead of smart wearables at Qualcomm, in an interview with VentureBeat.
"These kinds of products do two to five things really well. They run a more targeted software environment, like Linux. The whole user experience is much more targeted around these use cases. They still require low power, high integration, small size, and a good connected experience."
The new processor boasts low power features, including a Power Saving Mode (PSM) and an integrated LTE/3G modem. There's also support for Bluetooth and WiFi.
The Snapdragon Wear 1100 will also offer location tracking with Qualcomm's integrated location engine, iZat, which provides detailed location information through multi-GNSS and cell-ID positioning and hardware-based security. Qualcomm claims that the new chipset can run LTE on standby for a week without being recharged.
Back in February, the chipset manufacturer also launched the Snapdragon Wear 2100 chip which is a smaller option for wearables compared to the Snapdragon 400-series processors used in some Android Wear watches.
Qualcomm has collaborated with various Original Design Manufacturers (ODM) to create new wearables for kids incorporating the new chipsets. Aricent, SurfaceInk and weBandz are some of the ODMs who are working with Snapdragon 1100 chipset, according to Endgadget.
The newly announced chipset is commercially available now and starts shipping this week. The upcoming wearable gadgets with Snapdragon 1100 chipset are expected to hit the market in the second and third quarter of 2016.
