Although rumors had suggested previously that Nina Dobrev might return on the finale season of "The Vampire Diaries", yet nothing was confirmed. However, recently, the executive producer of the show Julie Plec has hinted that Dobrev might be back as a new character.

According to some, the decline in ratings of the show was what prompted the producers to bring in Dobrev for the finale. However, as previously rumored, it was believed that Dobrev might be back sometime soon after her tragedic exit in Season 6 of the show.

As for Dobrev's role in the finale of the series, it is yet to be confirmed. Viewers and fans have anticipated that Dobrev can return as either Elena Gilbert or Katherine Pierce, owing to the dual role in the prior seasons.

One popular theory among fans is Dobrev's return as the ultimate villain, Celeb Dirty Laundry noted. Either way, her return would disrupt the balance between the Salvatore brothers who had both loved both their characters with all their heart.

Meanwhile, both Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley were asked about the perfect ending to "The Vampire Diaries". Wesley mentioned that he would prefer the Salvatore brothers to walk in daylight and die.

Even Somerhalder mentioned that neither Elena or Katherine deserves the love of Salvatore brothers and bringing either of them back to Mystic Falls for Season 8 might be a true terror for either of them.
