Donations to Planned Parenthood Aid in Screenings and Education
Despite what your political beliefs are, the GOP are targeting women and hard. While it continues it's assault on Planned Parenthood, the right-wing extremists are creating bills that strips protection of victims of domestic violence both specifically immigrant women and now a aims to prevent abortions in all circumstances, including rape.
Despite all the attacks and financial cut-backs, Planned Parenthood continues to do what it has done best since its inception in the early 1960's: serve women's health.
Reuters reports that Planned Parenthood will use $3 million in donation money to launch a breast cancer initiative complete with expanded screenings including ultrasounds, biopsies and other follow-up services and education seminars for women under 40.
The money will also fund outreach programs targeting young and Hispanic women, due to higher death rates in those groups compared to any other.
Statistics from the World Health Organization show that about 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12% or 230,000 women) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime and according to Planned Parenthood at total of 750,000 breast exams were conducted just last year.
Donations flooded into Planned Parenthood from angry supporters shortly after the Susan G. Komen for the Cure made the short-lived decision to cut funding to the latter, after being pressured by anti-abortion activists and policy makers.
Resuters quotes organization president about the now revoked decision:
"We were overwhelmed with support from people all across the country who wanted to be sure that women could still get breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood,"
