Brad Pitt Seeks Joint Custody In Response To Angelina Jolie’s Divorce Filing
Brad Pitt officially filed his divorce documents on Nov. 4 and requested joint custody of his six children in his split from Angelina Jolie, according to TMZ.
Pitt countered divorce documents that were originally filed by Jolie on Sept.19. The actress had sought sole physical custody of their six children, who range from 8 to 15, giving Pitt only visitation rights. However, the estranged couple does agree on the same separation date, Sept. 15, one day after the alleged plane altercation between Pitt and his 15-year-old son, Maddox.
Since their highly publicized split, Pitt was placed under investigation by the Department of Child Services following accusations that he was physically and verbally abusive toward the teenager. Custody has been the major issue so far, with authorities investigating Pitt over what happened in the alleged dispute between him and his son on a private plane in mid-September. The couple reached a temporary custody agreement that allowed Pitt to meet his kids on monitored visits, while the investigation by a child welfare agency in Los Angeles is ongoing.
The outcome of the investigation is said to influence the decision of the custody of children, although courts in California generally favor awarding joint custody. The actors could also reach a private agreement that may not involve a public custody fight in court. Lawyer Kelly Chang Rickert told HollywoodLife that she believes the couple will ultimately share legal and physical custody.
"It is absolutely ridiculous to think either of them will end up with NO visitation or custody of the children. Visitation and custody are the same in California courts. When you have visitation, you have custody," said Rickert.
Pitt's filing does not reveal any new detail, according to Fox News. The actor cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce and he has made no mention of a prenuptial agreement yet.
