'Doctor Strange' starring Benedict Cumberbatch hit the theater on Nov. 20. The film has garnered mostly positive responses from the critics, who have praised the film for its entrancing visuals and succinct storyline. Tilda Swinton, in particular, has been declared remarkable in her role as 'The Ancient One.' However, the film has been criticized for following Marvel's tried-and-tested formula, with many comparing the film to 'Iron Man.'

Here's a look at what top rated critics said about 'Doctor Strange.'

The Independent scored the film: 3/5. While it praised the kaleidoscope visuals of 'Doctor Strange,' it remarked that the film failed to provide a character as outstanding as the visuals. It added that the lack of depth of character of Doctor Strange could be something that could be added in the sequels akin to how 'Iron Man' sequels added to Stark's.

Peter Debruge from Variety gave the film: 4/5. He said that while we may yawn at yet another threat to all mankind, Doctor Strange has been presented in such a way that this higher calling restores his ability to help the world entire. He mentioned however that though Doctor Strange's motives remain a mystery, the thing that this calling matters to him is well conveyed in the film.

Empire calls 'Doctor Strange,' Marvel's riskiest movie to date, but also that the gamble has been paid off well for "introducing spells and sorcery to the MCU-- not to mention doing it via a wizard resembling a prog rock drummer."

Matt Singer from ScreenCrush gave the film: 6/10. He said the only actor who makes a memorable impression is Swinton, with her sleek martial art moves and musings about the great beyond.

Todd McCarthy from The Hollywood Reporter gave the film: 4/5. He makes an interesting comparison with Christopher Nolan for the visual effects in 'Doctor Strange' which has "folding, bending and upending famous cityscapes to eye-popping effect." He says, "this action movie ostensibly rooted in the mind-expanding tenets of Eastern mysticism is different enough to establish a solid niche alongside the blockbuster combine's established money machines."
