‘Pacific Rim 2’ News Update: Filming has begun
'Pacific Rim 2' is set to release on Feb. 23, 2018 with the title, 'Pacific Rim: Maelstrom,' Cinema Blend reported. Latest news confirmed that the filming of 'Pacific Rim: Maelstrom' has officially begun in Sydney,Australia.
'Pacific Rim' released in 2013 which showed humans piloting giant robots to fight inter-dimensional monsters. The film was directed by Guillermo Del Toro. However, its sequel, 'Pacific Rim: Maelstrom' will not be directed by Del Toro, but Steven DeKnight will be directing it.
John Boyega of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' fame has been roped in for the sequel and is rumored to be playing the lead role of the son of Stacker Pentecost. Actor Idris Elba played the role of Stacker Pentecost in 'Pacific Rim' and is expected to reprise the role again in the sequel as well.
Cailee Spaeny, who starred in an Indie movie titled, 'Counting' was named as the female lead star in the sequel, Movienewsguide reported. The publication also said that there have been recent reports about Scott Eastwood being approached for a supporting role by the team of 'Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.'
Originally, Del Toro, Zak Penn and Travis Beacham, who had penned the screenplay of 'Pacific Rim' were supposed to write the screenplay of the sequel. The screenplay of the sequel later fell under the supervision of Jon Spaihts from 'Prometheus' and Derek Connolly from 'Jurassic Park.' Emily Carmichael from 'Adventures of Ledo and Ix,' Kira Snyder from 'The 100,' have also been reported to be writing the sequel.
Steven DeKnight posted a photo on Wednesday of a clapperboard which had the label of the upcoming sequel's title 'Maelstrom' printed on it, on his Twitter account. The director captioned the photo, "Day 1 of shooting, The adventure begins...#PacificRim2."
Boyega also posted a photo of his own script on Instagram and captioned it, "First day on Pacific Rim today. "Here's to a great adventure ahead."
