HTC Vive Goes Wireless With Expensive VR Add-On

Despite massive investment on VR, no one thought of getting rid of its biggest limitation the tethering cord. You might be using HTC Vive, Oculus rift or any other competitor. All of them rely on a cable to relay high-resolution video or maybe some other information.

A Startup company TPCAST will launch a $200 wireless accessory early next year which will work with the HTC Vive.

Currently, the biggest challenge while using the existing high-performance wireless solutions with the VR sets is that you are typically in constant motion. There are possibilities that your head or hand might block the receiver. High-frequency signals are required to stream the performance of two HD video streams needed for VR. These frequency signals are at times susceptible to losing the line of sight.

Reports from extremetech signify that in VR every frame has to be delivered in few milliseconds. In fact, a total system lag time of 11 milliseconds is the goal. TAPCAST device simply resolves this issue by including a small receiver chip in the top headband of the Vive headset. It happens in a way that it is minimally affected by the user while turning around. Much information is not available about this technology apart from a video that has been released by the by the company (TAPCAST).It seems that the user or a Vive Executive is having a good experience.

In the coming years as the technology evolves and stabilizes the users are expecting to see a wireless capability built into base headsets. This should at least happen to the premium versions.

The company is expecting to ship its first units in 2017 and the propriety shall be given to those who provide an HTC Vive serial number.

Other options might be available until the end of 2017 as companies like ouarkVR and Chinese Vive Website are trying to develop a wireless adapter.
