Lucasfilm Update: Star Wars Skywalker Saga Ends, Standalones Begin?
Fans are wondering what's in store for the future of the Star Wars franchise. Right now, four more films are underway: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: Episode VIII, Han Solo Star Wars Story Film, and Star Wars: Episode IX. Then Lucasfilm has to make up its mind about the direction they're headed.
EW sat down with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy about the possible movies on the way. They are planning to sit down January of next year. By then they would have had enough information to assess the franchise's current situation. They need to decide what to explore, and what will be exciting to the moviegoing public as mentioned by COMICBOOK.
As cited by Movie Pilot, Kennedy also said that the idea of standalone films actually came from George Lucas himself even before it was sold to Disney. George spoke with Kennedy about doing this when she first came aboard. He often thought about it and actually had a few thoughts and ideas and directions they could go. There were lots of opportunities inside the mythology. That was the first conversation she had.
There is a possibility that the Skywalker Saga might finally come to a close after Episode IX. And Kennedy said that depends on Colin Trevorrow's and Rian Johnson's idea about where they plan to take the story of Rey, Kylo Ren and the others. It will also depend on how Rogue One's performance. Since this is the first of the stand alone films.
The Star Wars Story Group
George Lucas hand-picked Kennedy to become the new president of the franchise when it was sold to Disney four years back. They formed what was known to fans as the Star Wars Story Group. This is led by Kiri Hart. The group consists of Lucasfilm employees who have been there forever. They know everything about Star Wars- everything. These people are Pablo Hidalgo, Leeland Chee, and Carrie Beck among others. This story group plus other creators in the inner circle are the ones involved in the discussions that go past animation. They will all be part in the future talks regarding Star Wars.
Kennedy added that the story stream and the trust plus the visual effect team that they've been working with are part of the meetings to take place in January. They always include the writers and directors that have part of the three other films. This way, they create a very collegiate group of individuals sharing ideas.
