Trump Health Care Law Repeal Threat To Women? Hospitals Prepare For Changes
Several professionals have recently expressed their concern regarding the future of women's welfare after President-elect Donald Trump appointed Tom Price as the new Secretary of Health and Human Services. The former orthopedic surgeon was known to have a conservative view on health care for women, especially with regards to Planned Parenthood.
Price did not show support for the law that protected women who used birth control or had an abortion from employment discrimination in Washington D.C. He is also among those who want to abolish the Affordable Care Act, which would greatly affect the provision of contraceptives and other preventive services to women.
Although Allison Hoffman and Jill Horwitz of the New York Times surmise that a total health care law repeal is unlikely, there is still a threat to the current preventive coverage for women that's being enforced by Congress.
The authors stated that the health plans were not indicative of measures that would address women's unique health needs. Family planning services and gender-specific health care were in danger of getting repealed as well, even if they have not been explicitly mentioned in the Affordable Care Act, according to Jezebel.
A recent study indicated that the Obamacare contraception rule was able to save women from unnecessary expenses with respect to their contraceptive costs as well as the benefits and direct impact it had on their family planning strategies. But even this might be repealed as soon as Trump begins office.
The Health Care Law repeal was said to affect these services: screening for gestational diabetes, well-women visits, counseling for sexually transmitted infections, screening, and counseling for domestic violence, breastfeeding support, and contraceptive methods and counseling.
