Lenovo Phab 2 Pro: Google Tango, 3 Rear Cameras Make For An Awesome Experience But Hardware, Software Fail To Impress

The Lenovo Phab 2 Pro has arrived, and it's a modest entry in the west, where the smartphone industry is dominated by iPhones and Samsung what-have-you's. The Lenovo Phab 2 Pro's main selling point is the Google Tango, a special software that provides 3D sensing using the device's camera. Speaking of cameras, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro has three of them.

According to The Verge, the Google Tango paired with the three rear cameras that the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is equipped with makes for a great experience. Google Tango lets users measure spaces, objects, and one's environment and lets them tinker with digital objects as if they're within that space. It goes hand in hand with the three cameras in the rear side of the phablet.

The Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is equipped with a 16-megapixel RGB camera, as well as a wide-angle fisheye camera. Last but not the least is the camera with an infrared emitter, which works with the Snapdragon processor, custom-built depth sensor module, gyroscope, and accelerometer to create the Google Tango experience. It's an awesome experience, save for the parts when the app freezes or shuts down without warning. Per Engadget, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro's hardware and software fail to impress, save for Google Tango.

It seems like the first step to something great, but it has not reached its full potential just yet. Its bulky size may be a turn off for some, combined with the lackluster camera quality and software, which also falls short. However, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro does deliver in terms of battery life, that is if you're not using the Google Tango. It's powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 652 processor, which is a step dwon from the premium Snapdragon 821.

What the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is great for, it seems, is educational apps. There's "The Dinosaurs Among Us" app co-created by the American Museum of Natural History that lets users place dinosaurs in one's real-life environments. It's a step forward in the right direction, but if there was more time, or maybe a second iteratio of the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro there would be so much more to enjoy with this phablet.
