Psy and Swoon Over Gangnum Style: Breaking Records
Dance and music crazes come and go. There have always been popular music and accompanying dance moves. The difference now is that we live in a global society. Thanks to our friend the internet (thanks Al Gore), a dance move or song can go viral and people all over the world are imitating Michael Jackson's thriller or doing the Macarena at weddings.
But the popularity of South Korean rapper PSY and his unbelievably catchy "Gangnam Style" video and dance, are sure to break all records. So far, his video have been viewed by over 270 million people and is currently the most 'liked' video ever on the site.
The Korean pop sensation is also currently the first Korean artist to reach the top spot on the US iTunes singles chart and has had unprecendented success around the world, rare for for any Asian pop artist.
PSY said Tuesday in a press conference in Seoul that he cried in disbelief when his song entered the Billboard 100 earlier this month. He went on to say he'll go topless in joy on a stage if "Gangnam Style" tops the chart. The song's currently at number 11 this week.
What's interesting is that most people want to live Gangnam style. Gangnam is a wealthy and trendy enclave in South Korea, much like Beverly Hills, Hollywood, the Village and Aspen in one place. One South Korean commentator described the Gangnam section of South Korea as the Korean equivalent of "Silicon Valley, Wall Street, Beverly Hills, Manhattan's Upper East Side and Miami Beach all rolled into one." The video is PSY comic version of his desire to live Gangnam style.
So for everyone who wants to live large and in charge, let's hope PSY's song reaches number one, he goes topless and we get to dream, that just like him, we get to live...Gangnam Style!
