NFL Trade 2017 Latest News & Update: Dallas Cowboys Need To Address Tony Romo Issue Soon
The Dallas Cowboys are on the brink of bidding adieu to the 2016-17 NFL season where team owner Jerry Jones will have to address more pressing matters. This has to do with the fate of Tony Romo, the expensive backup quarterback that many speculate will either retire or move on to another team. After yielding his starting position to rookie Dak Prescott, Romo finds himself displaced in the rotation of head coach Jason Garrett.
Under normal circumstances, the Cowboys can always keep Tony Romo at quarterback. But the fact that the 36-year-old veteran is due to make a whopping $24.7 million in 2017 could twist the arm of the Cowboys into trading up to the old hand.
There are several teams that are interested in Romo but that hefty paycheck may turn some of them off. Among the teams that could use the veteran include the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears, Buffalo Bills and the Houston Texans, NFL.com reported. Of the teams interested in Tony Romo, Denver seems like a sure landing spot. However, the Broncos are not expected to spend that big on the veteran, especially with his injuries in question.
Romo has been plagued with injuries in recent years and this was actually one reason why he lost his starting spot to Prescott in Dallas. The Broncos do have a couple of young players in Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian though both are pretty wet behind the ears. Experience is what Romo brings but this means nothing if he spends more time off the field.
Tony Romo has shown no indication he wants to hang up his spikes. Knowing that he is in the twilight of his career, Romo is expected to want one final run and exiting on his own terms. He could end up playing for another team but something has to be done in tweaking the financial obligation to the injury-prone veteran. He has three years remaining on his current deal with the Cowboys, ESPN reported.
