Shenanigans & Grift in a Southern Town: 91-Year-Old Mayor Admits to Stealing over $200,000 from Alabama Town
Small towns and political shenanigans seem to go hand-in-hand. There are dozens of movies in which the small southern town is ruled by a dishonest political appointee or party. All of which spelled big trouble for the young, hip visiting out-of-towners unlucky enough to drive through any county in Alabama or Mississippi.
But, what do you do when the mayor of your small town admits to stealing over $200,000, and she is over 90 years of age? Of course, you arrest her and try to recover some of the money, but time is not a luxury you have.
Mary Hixon, 91-years-old and mayor of River Falls, Alabama for over 30 years, has used taxpayer money as her personal funds for many years. Given her advanced age, one wonders if she was a criminal or just confused. Hixon admitted to stealing a total of $201,601. She resigned as mayor and was sentenced to five years in prison, but the sentence was suspended due to her age. The judge in the case also ordered restitution. Her estate is responsible if she dies before all the money is refunded.
Following the initial investigation into Hixon's financial affairs, an ordinary citizen went to talk to her and covertly filmed the meeting.
The mayor admitting abusing her position, briefed him on what to tell the police if necessary, and gave his $525 in exchange for his silence.
Among the thousands of dollars in town funds spent illegally were numerous payments to Richard Moss, who was living with Hixon at the time.
He was paid $80,000 over nearly three years to act as a town night watchman, but never did any of the work he was being paid for.
Moss also claimed $1,700 compensation after claiming his car had been hit by the municipal garbage truck - even though the police have no record of such an incident.
Hixon also charged the town for the salaries of employees who worked at her business, HCH Development
