'The Batman' News & Update: Ben Affleck Lets Go of Directorial Role, Has a Love-Hate Relationship With Franchise
For the longest time, news surrounding "The Batman" spin-off from this year's "Justice League" has been downright confusing. The star behind the film, Ben Affleck has been giving mixed signals about the questionably anticipated film, saying at one point that there's no script yet, and then turning around and saying that the script is already in development.
There's also the question about whether or not he's truly going to direct "The Batman." The latest news is that Ben Affleck lets go of directorial role for the film, implying that he has a love-hate relationship with franchise. Last year's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" was met with criticism and lost the title of "best hero versus hero film of 2016" to "Captain America: Civil War."
With this in mind, DC decided to borrow a page from Marvel's book and make "Justice League" a little lighter and less depressing. Some may have pointed a finger at Affleck for the results of "Batman v Superman," and now it seems that he's hoping to lessen his influence on "The Batman" as well. A statement has been released saying that Ben Affleck lets go of directorial role in "The Batman."
According to Vanity Fair, the actor claims that playing the role of "The Batman" requires so much out of him that he will not be able to function as both actor and director on the film. Instead, the studio is looking to team up with a director who will be able to create the film. Two directors who are currently in the rumor mill for the part are Matt Reeves and Matt Ross.
Now that Ben Affleck lets go of directorial role for "The Batman," how is the script coming along? "The Batman" has a targeted release date of 2018, something that the studio may want to push back, given the status of both the script and the director and lack thereof. As per Wired, there is still something reassuring with Affleck's announcement, as it seems he is still pushing through with the project nonetheless.
