NFL Latest News & Update: Colin Kaepernick Opting Out, Destination Unknown
Colin Kaepernick will reportedly opt out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers, something that hardly surprised many. Following a rough-and-tumble couple of years, the 29-year-old will try to test the NFL free agent market for a new home. There are several teams in need of a quarterback, where Kaepernick may land.
Among the teams in need of a quarterback include the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints and the Denver Broncos. However, none of these teams are expected to offer him the same or higher salary he is due for 2017. Once he opts out, Kaepernick forfeits the $14.5 million salary of the restructured contract he agreed to in October 2016, NFL.com reported.
With the San Francisco 49ers now led by new general manager John Lynch and the expected entry of Kyle Shanahan, Colin Kaepernick’s future is uncertain. Both could end up overhauling the 49ers and get new players to start over. The 29-year-old player did have his moments with the team. That included leading San Francisco to the 2012 NFC championship and the 2013 Super Bowl before his career went on the downturn.
But while those are positives, there are controversies as well. The most popular are his kneeling protest that many didn’t take too lightly during the 2016-17 NFL season. There is also his style of play, something Shanahan will keep a close watch. Once the offensive coordinator comes on board, it may be a case of going for the quarterback that best fits in the system.
Even if Kaepernick opts out, there is a chance he could return, SFGate reported. The possibility of Kaepernick returning could be a long shot with the disgruntled quarterback likely to prioritize other teams. After what he has been through, that too hardly comes as a surprise.
