NFL Latest News & Update: Tony Romo Flushes Retirement Talk, TV Career Can Wait

By Vaughn Dweebs | Update Date: Feb 06, 2017 09:00 AM EST

NFL veteran quarterback Tony Romo is not ready to call it quits, and the current Dallas Cowboys player plans to play on next season. This douses water on reports that Romo has been invited by a TV network and use him as a color analyst. The next question now is where will Tony Romo play.

Tony Romo does have an existing deal with the Dallas Cowboys, a lucrative one that other NFL teams are wary of. He has been closely linked to the Denver Broncos though John Elway wants to acquire him through free agency. Romo is due to make $24.7 million in 2017, $25.2 million in 2018 and $23.7 million in 2019, per Spotrac. At 36, other NFL teams would rather invest that sum on a younger and talented player over someone who has spent more time in sick bay since 2014.

Sticking with the Dallas Cowboys is also unrealistic. Spending that much for a backup quarterback has not yet sunk in even if Jerry Jones has been loyal to the 36-year-old player. With the rise of Dak Prescott, most believe that Romo will be traded soon with at least four other teams looming as potential landing spots for the NFL veteran, CBS reported.

Aside from the Broncos, plausible teams include the Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs. These teams do have players at quarterback but Tony Romo could be a tempting upgrade but at the right price. It also depends if Romo is willing to bend – meaning agreeing to a restructured deal, Broncos Wire suggested.

The NFL trade deadline will be on Jun. 1 and something which could give Jones and the Cowboys some financial flexibility. Either way, Tony Romo is expected to be seen next NFL season though it isn’t quite clear for now on what team he will be suiting up for.
