NBA 2017 Latest News & Update: Deron Williams Looks Forward To Joining The Cleveland Cavaliers
The Dallas Mavericks have waived Deron Williams and now the 32-year-old guard is looking forward to his next NBA chapter. While this would normally be bad news for any basketball player, the move is seen as something that could see him winning an NBA ring.
The Cleveland Cavaliers do have a vacancy, that of which is a backup guard position. This is the same position that LeBron James has been singled out on, asking Cavs management to get teammate Kyrie Irving some help. The team did hold mid-season tryouts with Jordan Farmar standing out. Aside from that, there was interest in Jose Calderon to fill the void.
The Cavs had their eye on Williams as early as last month. This was about the same time that James went off after which the names of Williams, Rajon Rondo and even Jameer Nelson came into the picture, SB Nation reported. Nothing really shaped up then seeing that Williams was hitched to the Mavs. Obviously, the scenario has now changed.
The Mavs will pay Williams about $2.5 million for the remainder of his contract, ESPN reported. The veteran guard is expected to clear waivers in the next 48 hours, after which he is expected to latch on to the Cavs. Once made official, Williams is one step closer to potentially getting an NBA ring – assuming the Cavs live up to their billing as this year’s favorite to win another Larry O’Brien title.
There were already indications prior to the NBA trade deadline that Williams would be dealt. He sat out the last two games and then the reported waive happened. At 32, Williams has averaged 13.1 points and 6.9 assists for the Mavs in 40 games. Those numbers seem more than enough for a backup guard with coach Tyronn Lue speaking highly of the all-star guard.
